Vacation Plans

I'm planning on coming to Chennai, Bangalore and Cochin for a few days in July and August. Bangalore, I think I have under control, but would love some tips for night life and shopping in Chennai?

I also plan to spend some time at a few hill stations (Ooty and Munnar), and then a few days in Thekkady.

Thanks for your help!

Nightlife in Chennai?? Can there be such a thing ;) And Kanjivaram saris aside, what can you possibly want fm Chennai that you couldn't get in ABCD Land? Er, doesn't matter, you've probably got something girly in mind.

From what I've heard, Munnar's worth a visit (never been there myself, somehow). I have been to Periyar tho, and that's certainly a good option. Who knows, you might even actually meet a tiger.

Ooty's probably going to be a mess, given that May - July is tourist season. Kodaikanal has to be the most compelling hill station in the South, although its also likely to be touristy this time of year. Still, you ought to visit, and besides, its only a few hours from Munnar. Some good excursions thereabouts too - Pillar Rocks for camera fodder (if the mist permits), Berijam lake etc

I know... I heard there really isn't nightlife there. I'm trying to make the best of the fact that I have to go to Chennai at all.

Which is a better hotel to stay in Chennai? Sheraton Park or Le Meridian? --- I heard the Chola Sheraton is so run down now.

Now, is it safe for indian girls to wear skirts (like knee length) and tank tops in Chennai? I haven't been there in 7 years, and last time I went when I was 17, I wore a dress (conservative!) and then decided to never, ever do that again! I couldn't take the staring (it is all over india, I know, but it was particularly bad in Chennai. Didn't help that I understand tamil and knew people were saying awful things!)

I'll post pictures of the elephants and wild boars in Thekkady, for sure.

Can't go to Kodaikanal, my mom is insistant that we spend a day at Guruvayur. Sorry -- we're true Keralites. I'm trying to convince her to take me to Kovalam beach. I really want to see a fishing village too.

AFAIK, what you wear in Chennai depends on which social circles/strata of society you mingle in. If you're pretty much doing the loitering tourist routine, there's no point drawing any attention to y'self - go with a salwar or something. Why dont you spend exactly 5 minutes in Chennai, and scoot off to Mahabalipuram, since it has beaches and history?

What d'you want to see in a fishing village??? The name says it all. You Mollies are unfathomable.

My mom is like addicted to Kancheepuram saris, so Chennai is a must for her. Some family friend reasons too to be visiting there. Plan to go to Mahabalipuram...

We have to stay at either Sheraton Park or Le Meridian... I can stay at either one for free because they are Starwood. So if you had to pick one, which would it be?

Er, well, I have no idea who the 'you' is, but since it might well be the adoring public ;) , the only hotel I've been to in all of Nadland that's worth its while, is the Park Sheraton - but that was 5 or 6 years back. Its not horrific tho.

Btw, if the right person in Mahab hears yr accent, get ready to receive the most outlandish quotes (unsolicited no less) for, er, well, stuff. I've had the most extraordinary (and irrelevant) negotiations bang in the middle of that town.

'Njoy yourself

Hi MBACutie,
Have we met yet? Also a NYC Michigan admit but I can't figure out if we have!
Anyway, I also happen to be going to India this summer- but I don't think we'll be anywhere near eachother. I fly into Delhi, will be interning in Rajasthan and then might hit Goa afterwards with a flight back on Aug. 17th. If you've been to Rajasthan I'd love some suggestions. Also, I was wondering if you could add my blog to your favorites list? I'm actually trying to fundraise for my volunteer project in Udaipur. You seem to get quite a few hits (as opposed to my next to nothing hit rate right now) so I'm sure it couldn't hurt! It's www.microfinancegirl.blogspot.com.
thanks!
